The Guide

From Your Waikiki Hotel to the Turtles

Where each boat leaves from, what its turtle guarantee says, which ones suit non-swimmers and children, and what they cost.

From Waikiki you snorkel with green sea turtles, honu, from a boat. The boats go to a reef off the shore that they call Turtle Canyon, a ride of 10 to 20 minutes, and they leave from four kinds of place: Kewalo Basin Harbor on Ala Moana Boulevard, the Ala Wai harbor beside the Prince Waikiki, the Hilton Hawaiian Village pier and lagoon, and the sand of Waikiki Beach itself. A few pick you up at your hotel. Most promise a free return trip or a refund if you see no turtle, and several take children and people who cannot swim well. Wherever you start, the honu is protected: you watch from 10 feet away and never touch.

The short answer

If you want the least planning, book Oceanstar’s Turtle Canyon snorkel with pickup, sold on GetYourGuide as Waikiki: 4-Hour 6-Activity Turtle Canyon Snorkel with Pickup. A van collects you at one of 12 points in Waikiki, the boat takes about 20 minutes to the site, and you get about three hours on the water: the turtles first, then kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and floating sea chairs. A certified lifeguard is on board, and the crew gives flotation gear and help to children and anyone who is not a confident swimmer. If no turtles are spotted, you can come back on another tour free. It costs from $107 in current promotion (usually $120) a person, with 129 reviews (checked November 2026).

What happens if you see no turtle

No one controls a wild animal, so the boats write their own terms, and they are not the same:

BoatIf no turtle is seen
OceanstarCome back on another tour free
Living Ocean ToursEveryone on the trip may come back free within 12 months, subject to space
Oahu CatamaransA full refund
Hawaii NauticalA free re-ride on a trip of the same or lesser value; no refunds
Holokai CatamaranNo turtle promise

The turtle guarantees compared puts every boat’s terms side by side.

Not a strong swimmer, or bringing children?

You can still go, on the right boat. Oceanstar gives flotation and help in the water to beginners and children, Blue Ocean Snorkeling uses life jackets and flotation boards, and Charter Oahu has a swim step where a non-swimmer can sit with their feet in the water. Others ask for basic swimming ability, among them Living Ocean Tours, Pink Sails and the Hāwea catamaran. For children, Hawaii Nautical’s lunch catamaran is family friendly for all ages with life jackets for everyone, while Pink Sails and Hawaii Ocean Charters start at 7. See non-swimmers and kids.

Whatever you book, take the flotation the crew offers. Snorkeling is the activity most often involved in ocean drownings in Hawaii, and on the shore from the Hilton Hawaiian Village to Kapahulu, 41 of the 50 people who drowned between 2009 and 2018 were not Hawaii residents, according to Hawaii’s health department.

The turtle you meet, and the rules

The turtle at Turtle Canyon is the green sea turtle, honu in Hawaiian. Hawaii’s green turtles are a population found nowhere else, listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act and Hawaii state law. Adults grow to 3 to 4 feet in shell length, graze on limu, seaweed, and come up to breathe every 15 to 30 minutes, which is when snorkelers and the people left on deck see them rise.

  • Keep 10 feet (3 meters) away, in the water and on the beach: that is NOAA’s and the state’s recommended distance. It is guidance, not a legal line, but harassing a turtle is illegal.
  • Never touch, chase, ride or feed a turtle. Hawaii’s natural-resources department, DLNR, says touching or feeding a turtle in any way is a disturbance and illegal; under state law a first offence is a misdemeanor, with a fine of at least $250, up to a year in jail, or both.
  • If a turtle swims toward you, stay still and let it pass.
  • Sunscreen: since January 1, 2021, Hawaii has banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription.

No state or federal page describes Turtle Canyon itself: the name, and the reef, are the boats’. Closer in, the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District covers the shore from the Kapahulu groin to the Natatorium, where taking or injuring any marine life is banned. See turtles from the beach.

Who should look beyond Waikiki

  • You want to see turtles resting on the sand without getting wet, or snorkel Hanauma Bay: snorkelingwithturtlesoahu.com covers the rest of the island, from Laniakea Beach on the North Shore to the west-side boats from Ko Olina.
  • You are staying at Ko Olina or on the west side: the boats from Waikiki are a long drive away; a west-side boat is closer.
